Mustangs Take Rubber Match 5-0
The Mustangs win a rubber match against the Great Falls Voyagers to keep up with the second-half playoff chase with a final score of 5-0.
It's just the second rubber match win and the first time the Mustangs have shut out an opponent this season since May 25th when they blanked Missoula 4-0 in seven innings and the first nine-inning shutout this season.
With both starters tossing a scoreless first inning, the Mustangs answered in the bottom of the second. Gabe Wurtz and John Michael Faile both drew 3-1 count walks to lead off the frame. With one out, Luke Fennelly doubled home Wurtz.
Next at-bat, Blake Evans hit his first professional homer to drive in three to make it 4-0. Brady West followed it up with a first pitch homer as the Mustangs went back-to-back to make it 5-0.
The Voyagers left a runner in scoring position in the third in Riley Jepson. With one out, Jepson reached on a hit by pitch, and Jaylen Williams grounded a ball to the third-baseman Connor Denning, who deflected it to Fennelly and he delivered a good throw to first for out number two. Anthony Herron Jr. stranded Jepson at third on a ground ball to Denning.
They also stranded the bases loaded in the second inning after a one-out walk by Edie McCabe and a single by Ryan Peliter, with a two-out walk to Jaylen Armstrong. Xane Washington flew out to left to retire the side.
Cameron Repetti tossed six scoreless innings giving up five hits and a walk with three punchouts. He receives a winning decision.
Nate Jenkins tossed a scoreless seventh and receives a hold. While Keagan McGinnis tossed a scoreless eighth giving up just a hit for another hold. In that inning, the Voyagers had their first runner in scoring position since the third in Jepson who singled, and McGinnis retired the next two batters. Meanwhile, Trevor Jackson struck out the side in the ninth to end the ball game 5-0.
