Faile's Grand Slam Highlights 8-5 Win

Mustangs ride five scoreless innings from right-hander Jalen Evans and a grand slam by catcher John Michael Faile to win 8-5 over the Northern Colorado Owlz Sunday afternoon.

The victory marks the Mustangs (17-19) first road series win of the season.

Despite the score, fans were treated to a pitcher's duel for more than five innings, as Evans and Owlz right-hander Austin Schnieder combined to give up just four hits through each of their scoreless five innings.

Schneider attempted to pitch the sixth, but gave up back to back base hits to lead off the sixth by Mustangs left-fielder Gabe Wurtz and third-baseman Tyler Wilber. With one out, designated hitter Brady West hit both runners home on a two-RBI triple to right-center field to make it 2-0. West then scored on a wild pitch that got away from Olwz (17-18) catcher Jordan Rathbone to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.

Evans (2-2) would exit after his fifth inning of scoreless pitching, giving up just three hits and four walks while striking two batters. He received the winning decision.

Mustang right-hander Nate Jenkins pitched the seventh, giving up a one out home run to Henry George to pull Northern Colorado within seven runs.

Right-fielder Bryce Donovan hit a full-count lead-off home run in the seventh from the left-handed hitter's box that sailed over the left-field wall to make it 4-1. With the bases loaded and one out, Faile hammered a grand slam over the center field wall - the first of the year for the Mustangs and Faile's third homer in two games giving the Mustangs an 8-1 lead.

In the seventh, right-hander Tristen Hudson surrendered a leadoff home run center-fielder Henry George to make it an 8-2 ball game.In the eighth, Hudson gave up three runs on three hits - a leadoff double to left-fielder Dave Matthews, a one out RBI single to second-baseman Payton Robertson, and a two-out two-run home run for catcher Jordan Rathbone in the eighth to make it 8-5.

Right-hander Tyler Statler pitched the last out of the eighth grounding out shortstop Kevin Jimenez on the first pitch. Statler faced four more batters, giving up a lead-off four-pitch walk to George, striking out right-fielder Euro Diaz, and forcing designated hitter Abdel Guadalupe and Matthews to ground out to end the game.
